Biological Visualization - Microscopy, Flow Cytometery, Electron Microscopy and Image Analysis

BioVis - Biological Visualisation

The BioVis platform of Uppsala University provides you with a unique combination of technology and know-how for visualization of biological samples at the tissue, cell and subcellular level. We specialize in microscopy, electron microscopy, flow cytometry and image analysis. We can offer state of the art electron- confocal and light microscopy, as well as analytical and imaging flow cytometry and cell sorting.

The Medical & Pharmaceutical faculty at Uppsala University supports BioVis financially, thus the user fees can be kept low. The platform is available for all universities, governmental agencies & private companies. Information about users fees can be found here.

With proper training, provided by us, you can get almost complete access to our equipment.

Help us to spread the information that BioVis is available with its service for Uppsala University and beyond. You can download our Brochure here: BioVis Brochure.

Entrance Card System

To get access to BioVis premises you need to have a door-card. Our old Card system (Landstinget i Uppsala Län) is no longer valid. A new card system is established. The new card system does NOT apply for research groups based in Rudbeck Lab, as they have already access. Please contact for more details.

NEWSLETTER September 2019

During September, we will continue in hosting  demo-instruments.                                     We hope you can join us in testing them.

Demo: Leica Thunder system (follow up)

Thank you all, who participated in the demo of Leica´s Thunder Imaging system. As the system stirred up quite some interest we ask you kindly to share your thoughts with us. As a Thunder user you will most proably get contacted by  - if not feel free to contact him.

We are planning to purchase new instruments end 2019, beginning 2020:

  • MultiPhoton Microscope: installation around October/November
  • Slide Scanner : see demo, in planning stage
  • Super resolution (STED) Microscope: in planning stage

Demo: Slide Scanner

We will host ZEISS and 3DHistech in presenting their Slide Scanner. ZEISS will be at BioVis with their AxioScan and 3DHistech will be present with their Panoramic flash III.

BioVis is planning to purchase a slide scanner end of 2019 – so your input is valuable to us:   WELCOME TO TEST YOUR SAMPLES

ZEISS AxioScan @ BioVis , Sept 10-13 Workshops with Ulrich Sauer

Sept. 10-13: 09:00-12:00 / 13:00-16:00

3DH Panoramic III @ BioVis, Sept 03-13 Workshops with Frank Hammar

Sep.03-06, 09:00-12:00 / 13:00 - 16:00

Demo: Flow Cytometer NovoCyte Quanteon

We will host Novocytes Quanteon Flowcytometer September 06 - 13 including a workshop on Thursday September 06 and 12

The Quanteon FlowCytometer will give you the possibility to analyze your sample  using tube holder and various plates. It offers outstanding sensitivity,  4 Lasers, 25 parameter, true count, an easy way in compensation and user friendly software when it comes to acquisition, analysis, heatmap, and reports. Contact to book your demo.

Demo: Flow Cytometer Thermofisher Attune

We will host Thermofishers Flowcytometer  Attune October 01 - 04 with workshop dates for  October 01-02

Experience the difference acoustic assisted hydrodynamic focusing technology brings to your workflow.

A flow cytometer designed with your research in mind

  • Conserve sample and quickly run experiments with sample flow rates ranging from 12.5–1,000 μL/min
  • Intuitive software interface and easy-to-follow workflow that is quick to learn, teach and use
  • Save time and minimize cell handling with faster protocols
  • Expand your capabilities with up to 6 channels of detection off the violet laser
  • Contact to book your demo.

Image Analysis software

We would like to point out that BioVis can help in analyzing your image data using various softwares. We have IMARIS (full package), Huygens on our workstations, a well as Image J, QuPath, and Cell Profiler. We can also refer you to the BioImage Informatics Facility (BIIF) of SciLifeLab, which offers free support in setting up bioimage analysis solutions using ImageJ, CellProfiler, QuPath, KNIME, Ilastik, Python and MATLAB to all researchers in Sweden (20h of free support per Principal Investigator). CellProfiler and KNIME are – next to other applications - especially well-suited for High-Content-Screening data. QuPath is a powerful tool for the analysis of histopathological slides of bigger file sizes (e.g. from slide-scanners, TMAs). Dr. Anna Klemm from BIIF will be one of the teachers at IAS.

Courses at BioVis

Our annual and monthly courses are updated and can befound here.  The courses are open to all and  include the 3.5hp PhD course “Methods for Cell Analysis”, the 1.5hp PhD course “Introduction to Image Analysis Softwares” our Instrument Introduction Courses and our Image J courses.
