BioVis - Biological Visualisation

The BioVis platform of Uppsala University provides you with a unique combination of technology and know-how for visualization of biological samples at the tissue, cell and subcellular level. We specialize in microscopy, electron microscopy, flow cytometry and image analysis. We can offer state of the art electron- confocal and light microscopy, as well as analytical and imaging flow cytometry and cell sorting.

The Medical & Pharmaceutical faculty at Uppsala University supports BioVis financially, thus the user fees can be kept low. The platform is available for all universities, governmental agencies & private companies. Information about users fees can be found here.

With proper training, provided by us, you can get almost complete access to our equipment.

Entrance Card System

To get access to BioVis premises you need to have a door-card. Our old Card system (Landstinget i Uppsala Län) is no longer valid. A new card system is established. The new card system does NOT apply for research groups based in Rudbeck Lab, as they have already access. Please contact Jeremy.Adler@igp.uu.se for more details.

Summer Closure ?

Lucky you! Thanks to our host department, IGP and especially the group of Maria Ulvmar - BioVis will not close completely over summer, as we have a stand-in when staff is on vacation. Below are more details regarding Summer ´closure´ and which instruments are available. Be aware that there will be no (or limited) customer support provided by BioVis July 01 -17. More information can be found on site (on the doors here at BioVis).

DEMO: Leica Thunder

Demo: Slide Scanner

We will host ZEISS and 3DHistech in presenting their Slide Scanner. ZEISS will be at BioVis with their AxioScan and 3DHistech will be present with their Panoramic flash III . The workshop, presentation and demo will be happening beginning of September and both companies will also present their analyzing softwares. More precise dates will be announced during August. BioVis is planning to purchase a slide scanner end of 2019 – so your input is valuable to us: WELCOME TO TEST YOUR SAMPLES.

Conference: MASH UP (for a sustainable future)

October 04, 09:00 – 13:00 at Biomedicinskt centrum (BMC) B10. Lunch is included.

ACHIEVING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE is the defining challenge of our time. In order to be successful in this grand endeavour, a system-wide approach is required, and new knowledge and solutions need to be generated across traditional disciplinary borders. IF SO, YOU ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND THE MASH-UP CONFERENCE for a Sustainable Future this October. At this event, researchers from different disciplines will be brought together with the aim of initiating new and collaborative research projects focusing on sustainable development. THE OVERALL AIM OF THE MASH-UP is to both act as a catalyst for new ideas, and to provide help with practical issues such as funding relating to cross-disciplinary research. The mash-up is open to those of you who want to break into this field as well as you who already have a background in sustainable development. THE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD in the form of a workshop where the participants will be invited to submit what they see as key challenges, essential and inspiring research topics and suggestions for potential cross-disciplinary collaborations in sustainable development. Based on this input, the participants will then engage in idea generation, form teams and develop plans for realizable research projects. We will also be joined by representatives from major funding institutions and from the Swedish delegation for Agenda 2030. The number of participants is limited. Whats a MASH UP You might wonder.


Image Analysis software

We would like to point out that BioVis can help in analyzing your image data using various softwares. We have IMARIS (full package), Huygens on our workstations, a well as Image J, QuPath, and Cell Profiler. We can also refer you to the BioImage Informatics Facility (BIIF) of SciLifeLab, which offers free support in setting up bioimage analysis solutions using ImageJ, CellProfiler, QuPath, KNIME, Ilastik, Python and MATLAB to all researchers in Sweden (20h of free support per Principal Investigator). CellProfiler and KNIME are – next to other applications - especially well-suited for High-Content-Screening data. QuPath is a powerful tool for the analysis of histopathological slides of bigger file sizes (e.g. from slide-scanners, TMAs). Dr. Anna Klemm from BIIF will be one of the teachers at IAS.


Courses at BioVis

Our annual and monthly courses are updated and can befound here.  The courses are open to all and  include the 3.5hp PhD course “Methods for Cell Analysis”, the 1.5hp PhD course “Introduction to Image Analysis Softwares” our Instrument Introduction Courses and our Image J courses.
